AM Coffee Talk #31 - What I'm Reading This Week
Reading has been my favorite past time for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I distinctly remember weekly trips to the local public library where I would come home with at least 10 books every time. This voracious reading is something I continued through high school until I got to college. In college, I took a lot of English literature classes, even before I was an English major, which meant I was still always reading something. I didn't have time to really read for fun though because I was just so exhausted from the amount of reading I would do for classes.
I'll be the first to admit that the act of watching TV in the evenings after a long day was much more appealing to me than reading when I was transitioning into life as a working adult. I would come home from work emotionally exhausted from 8 hours of constant stimulation from other people (thanks anxiety) and only wanted to do things that required little to no brain function. This year, I really wanted to change that habit so I set a goal at the beginning of the year to read at least one book per month. If you look at my Goodreads account, it looks like I'm actually on target for the year because there were some months where I read a couple of books instead of just one. But I haven't been actively reading since May hit with the flurry of graduation and wedding activities.

Lately, though, I've found myself craving the act of reading. I was so excited to have cable again that I pretty much have had the tv on non-stop since it was hooked up and I think I've finally reached the point where having it is normal again. But I've been aching for the chance to curl up with a good book. We're on a budget though so I decided to check out the local public library. I haven't actually had a library card since I was in high school and the idea of having one again made me positively giddy.
I was blown away by the Columbus Public Library. That place is stunning... and huge! There are three branches and I'm sure I'll explore all of them at some point just for fun but I seriously wandered around like a little kid in a candy store for an hour. I ended up grabbing four books after asking for recommendations so I figured I would share them with you guys today. Seriously, should we start an official AM Coffee Collective Book Club?
What I'm Reading This Week:
First, We Make the Beast Beautiful: A New Journey Through Anxiety - I picked this book up specifically because I was drawn to the cover. I had no idea that it was actually a book on anxiety. I'm already 20 pages in and kind of obsessed with it. Be prepared for me to write a full blog post on it. Goodreads | Amazon
Sarah's Key - My high school English teacher recommended this one and I was so intrigued by the plot synopsis. It's also a movie. But we all know that books are usually better than the movies (don't get me started on how big of a flop The Darkest Minds was last night) so I knew I needed to read the book first. The plot takes place in Paris both in 1942 and 2002 and has to do with the Holocaust. Goodreads | Amazon
The Woman in Cabin 10 - This book has been on my TBR list for a while now. I love a good mystery/true crime/thriller a la The Woman in the Window. I know once I pick this book up I won't be able to stop reading it so it's a good thing my husband is going to be pretty busy this week. Goodreads | Amazon
The Lying Game - Same author, same genre. I bet you saw this one coming. Like I said, I'm a sucker for a good thriller. Goodreads | Amazon
